Mescalero Apache Technical Assistance Project

The Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA) contracted with LSC Transportation Consultants, Inc. (LSC) to provide technical assistance to Mescalero Apache Tribe. The technical assistance specifically focuses on identifying transit needs on the Reservation and how to best provide public transportation to meet those needs.

The Mescalero Apache Tribe has identified public transit as a major need for tribal members. Economic development efforts have been successful, but unemployment continues to be very high on the Reservation. Access to employment is a major impediment for many tribal members. Although jobs may be available either on the Reservation or in nearby communities, many individuals do not have reliable transportation to pursue these jobs.

Project information will be posted on this website as it becomes available. Input is sought from the community regarding transportation needs and aspects of the plan as it is developed. Comments may be sent by email to LSC.

As meetings are scheduled, the information will be posted regarding times and locations. The project schedule is available. Specific meeting dates will be shown with the project schedule.

The first Technical Memorandum is available for review. This Technical Memorandum will be presented at an upcoming public meeting and a meeting of the Advisory Committee.

Technical Memorandum #2 provides an inventory of the existing transportation providers and transportation resources in the region.

Technical Memorandum #3 presents various transit service and organizational options. Preliminary recommendations are provided for discussion and selection of a preferred plan.

The Draft Final Report has been prepared and submitted to the Mescalero Apache Tribe and CTAA. Following review of the preliminary recommendations presented in Technical Memorandum #3, representatives of the tribe selected a preferred plan to be developed for implementation. The Draft Final Report includes the information presented in the three Technical Memoranda plus the implementation plan for the preferred service plan.
